Below are some of my own observations...please correct me if I'm wrong...

The picture was taken looking slightly southeast.

1. The water tower is black. What year was it painted silver?
2. The long white building one block S.E. of the water tower must be the post office, since the new post office was built on the vacant lot west of the water. That building also served as Alexander's grocery at one point, but it seems that Alexander's new store is visible at the south end of main street, where main street dead-ends.
3. The new high school, auditorium, and band hall are clearly visible. Weren't these completed in or about 1950?  The trees in front of the school seem to have a good start. The swimming pool and new gym are absent.
4. Near the top right hand corner, you can see parts of the four wings of the new elementary school....the two longer outer wings and the two shorter inner wings. As I recall, we moved into this school in the '55-'56 school year....I was in the fourth grade.
5. If you zoom in or use a magnifying glass, a couple of the cars on main street appear to be two-toned '55 or '56 Chevys.
6. The Baird's house is across the street and S.W. of the water tower. South of that is the B&B (Boyd's) grocery. Two blocks south of that (past Marshall's Lumber) is Hurta's Grocery (or Spruill's) and Wacker's variety store just east of it.
7. Across the street east is Ikey's Lewis Drug on the corner, half of which is obscured by the two story stone building which stands up against it on the north side.
8. South of there is the Rex Theater with a vacant lot on the north side. As I recall, the Catholic church was on that lot and was moved next door to the new St. Cecilia's on 5th street for use as a parish hall. Anyone who knows the exact dates of these happenings can help us to pinpoint the date of this photograph. Across from the Rex to the west is Whitworth's hardware.
9. A few blocks south, the Gasser's baseball field is clearly visible.
10. It seems that the Church of Christ is already in place across from the H.S. auditorium.
11. There are other things, some I haven't mentioned, and others I just haven't noticed.  Please share the things that you notice and know about with us.
12. By the way, can anyone make out what is written on the roof of Clary's Feed Store? (two blocks east and slightly north of the water tower)

Have fun browsing this picture, and let me know what you discover.....and any dates that you remember.
