Subject: Gar Fish (Circa 1947) Date: Sat, 22 Nov 1997 12:08:40 -0500 From: Sid Starnes <sidaug@nh.ultranet.com> To: GPhil@ix.netcom.com

My first experience with Gar fish was when four of us jumped into someone's Model "A" sedan and headed for the Pecos river via an old back road (could have been a pipeline road).

We arrived near dusk and I was elected, or I elected myself, to swim a trotline across the Pecos, secure it on the other side, then swim back. Which I might add I accomplished with a great amount of flare and finese. The following morning when we pulled the trotline up there was nothing but Gar fish on the hooks. Since I had never seen this type of fish before, I immediately added two and two together and decided that "Gar" meant alligator, and I had no intention of ever getting back into this particular part of the Pecos river ever!!!

Well, we didn't catch any fish worth while, but we certainly had a great time, yes one that I will probably never forget.

More to come in another writing, Sid Starnes
